LONG BEACH, Calif. – With more than 20 million residents and more than 5.4 million vehicles on the road*, Mexico City is dealing with severe air pollution challenges in 2016. Much of this pollution is directly related to vehicles that have faulty emissions systems. One way to help reduce vehicle emissions is to replace malfunctioning oxygen sensors with a new sensor, and the ideal choice is a DENSO First Time Fit® Oxygen Sensor.

In 1989, Mexico City started The Hoy No Circula program to restrict driving on certain days to improve air quality. The initial program was successful, but in 2016, the air pollution problem in Mexico City was so severe, new restrictions had to be put in place. After July 1, 2016, the emissions requirements became much stricter, taking some vehicles off the road.

Oxygen sensors are a vital component in today’s emissions systems, and are among the most sensitive and critical components on an engine. In order for the emissions system to perform properly, the oxygen sensor must adhere to OE standards, which have incredibly close tolerances.

DENSO First Time Fit® Oxygen Sensors meet or exceed those tolerances. In addition, installing new DENSO Ignition Wires and DENSO Spark Plugs help ensure that an engine is operating efficiently while helping to reduce emissions.

“At DENSO, we understand that air pollution is a real issue in Mexico City, and we feel that if owners replaced faulty sensors with a DENSO Oxygen Sensor, as well as installing new ignition wires and spark plugs, that could have a positive effect on the air quality in the city,” said Frank Cisek, senior manager, Aftermarket Sales, DENSO Products and Services Americas, Inc. “Of the 5.4 million vehicles in Mexico City, it is estimated that 1.7 million vehicles do not meet emission standards. That’s why we believe installing a DENSO Oxygen Sensor, Ignition Wires and Spark Plugs could dramatically reduce exhaust emissions in the city.”

DENSO offers one of the most complete product lines of Oxygen Sensors, Ignition Wires and Spark Plugs in the industry, which covers most of the vehicles that are on the streets of Mexico City.
